Reunion

July 21, 2009

In a quick turn of events, my family arranged to come together for a weekend “reunion” of sorts to celebrate my grandpa’s birthday down in Houston, TX. It was a blessing to reconnect with my cousins on my dad’s side of the family, who I haven’t seen in 7 years. We also had the two new additions to our family this year, Noah and Anna present. They were definitely the star attractions for the weekend.

It’s so crazy sometimes to sit back and just observe how time has passed. I have so many memories with my cousins when we were kids and now to sit around the kitchen table as adults is a little strange, where did the time go? We still boast that the kids table is always the best table in our family, and I am completely biased. It will always be the best, no matter hold old the kids get.

I am so thankful for this time with my family as I think about my adventure out to California. I will be very far from them all in just a short time, and honestly, it is a challenge for me as I prepare to head out there. But, I am trusting the Lord that the next time I get to see them won’t be too awfully far away.

Through the looking glass

A few weeks ago we had the privilege of having my cousin, Karen and her friend James from film school out in Colorado come for a week and shoot a documentary about Cairo. It was both precious and surreal to see a story begin to weave itself together about this silly little town in the middle of nowhere that has a crazy way of impacting those who pass through it. As I looked at their photos and footage, it really impacted my heart. I don’t quite know how to put into words why, even, but maybe there’s something about looking in on your community again with fresh eyes. Maybe it’s the way film gives a voice to stories that have been hidden. I guess, it’s just always meaningful to see others uncover something special in a field you’ve been working in for a long time, and rather thought no one would ever notice (not that anyone needed to). For whatever reason I can’t quite get my mind around, it was a gift from the Lord to me as I wrap up this season in Cairo to reflect for a moment on the uniqueness of this place and the ways I have seen God work here.
